Workshops

Family Services of Central Alberta offers a range of interactive – psychoeducational workshops for, other local agencies – which in turn provide information provided within the workshop – to their respective clients.

The workshops are facilitated by our in-house family therapists, who are Canadian Certified Counsellors and/or Registered Provisional Psychologists.

 

Dementia, Loss & Grief: A Complicated Journey
  • Workshop description: This workshop runs between 1.5-2 hours (depending on attendee participation level and length of time for questions/answers). Its is designed to help caregivers or support workers that support individuals diagnosed with dementia. The workshop material is divided into three sections: defining grief, supporting individuals diagnosed with dementia from a support worker’s perspective and loss and grief from a client’s perspective.
  • Method of delivery: PowerPoint Presentation, in-person facilitation, and interactive components throughout.
    • There is some adaptability with this workshop to specify it around the attendees’ needs.
Home Support & Boundaries: Where to Draw the Line
  • Workshop description: This workshop runs between 2-2.5 hours (depending on attendee participation level and length of time for questions/answers). It is designed to help support workers set healthy boundaries when working with in-home clients. The workshop material is divided into three parts: learning about boundaries, setting effective boundaries and pulling it all together.
  • Method of delivery: PowerPoint Presentation, in-person facilitation, and interactive components throughout.
    • There is some adaptability with this workshop to specify it around the attendees’ needs.
The Impact of Stress on Child Development
  • Workshop description: This workshop runs between 1.5-2 hours (depending on attendee participations level and length of time for questions/answers). It is designed to help anyone that is working with children understand how stress impacts child development. The workshop material is divided into three parts: part one is understanding stress, part two is stress and childhood development and part three is how to reduce the impact of childhood stress.
  • Method of delivery: PowerPoint Presentation, in-person facilitation, and interactive components throughout.
    • There is some adaptability with this workshop to specify it around the attendees’ needs.
Understanding Mental Health
  • Workshop description: This workshop runs between 1-1.5 hours (depending on attendee participation level and length of time for questions/answers). It is designed to help anyone that is interested in developing a basic understanding some of the key points related to mental health. The workshop material is divided into two parts: part one includes defining mental health, the mental health continuum, pain and suffering in life and taking care. Part two includes normal versus abnormal behaviour, cross-cultural considerations, risk factors and treatments.

Elder Abuse: The Financial Perspective
  • Workshop description: This workshop runs between 2-2.5 hours (depending on attendee participation level and length of time for questions/answers). It designed to help elders and anyone supporting elders, better understand and address elder abuse. The workshop material is divided into two main sections: section one addresses definitions, risk factors, forms of elder abuse and the financial perspective. Section two addresses relationship triangles, boundary setting, assertiveness and forms of guilt.

The Impact of Separation/Divorce on Children
  • Workshop description: This workshop runs between 1-1.5 hours (depending on attendee participation level and length of time for questions/answers). It is designed to help parents that are experiencing separation/divorce and anyone else who is supporting separating/divorcing parents. The workshop material is divided into four main parts: part one is understanding terms, part two is factors to consider, part three is the impact on children and part four is case studies.
  • Method of delivery: PowerPoint Presentation, in-person facilitation, and interactive components throughout.

Loss, Grief & Bereavement
  • Workshop description: This workshop runs between 1.5-2 hours (depending on attendee participation level and length of time for questions/answers). It is designed to help anyone who wants to increase their understanding around loss and grief. The workshop material is divided into three sections: understanding the experience of grief, understanding types of loss and understanding the diversity of experience when it comes to bereavement.
  • Method of delivery: PowerPoint Presentation, in-person facilitation, and interactive components throughout.
    • There is some adaptability with this workshop to specify it around the attendees’ needs.

Workshop Cost Calculator

Facilitation fee: $70/HR based on workshop run time.

  • Workshop development and revisions to meet attendees’ needs: $60/Hr.
  • Travel fee: $0.60/KM (during winter if an early start is required outside of Red Deer – there will be a hotel accommodation fee to stay the night before the workshop).

 

Facilitator and Workshop Information

 Blaine Findlay develops and facilitates the workshop (sometimes with an assistant). Blaine’s background includes the following:

  • Current registered psychologist in Alberta (#7684)
  • Current Canadian Certified Counsellor (#13455)
  • Seasoned family therapist
  • Manager of Clinical Services at FSCA
  • Over a decade of clinical counselling experience – working with individuals, couples and families.
  • Clinical experience working with client age groups ranging from children to seniors.
  • 15 years of experience working in the human services field, in a variety of roles.

 

  • All workshops are developed in house and the workshop material is based on research literature, clinical experience and personal experience. The workshops are participatory in nature and include group discussions, group exercises and an opportunity for questions and answers.
