Alberta seniors with lower incomes may qualify for financial assistance through the Alberta Government Financial Assistance Programs. In order to access benefits, seniors need to complete a Seniors Financial Assistance application. Once a senior has applied to the program eligible seniors will be enrolled in the Alberta Seniors Benefit Program, Special Needs Assistance Program and Dental/Optical for seniors programs (Alberta Health).
Eligibility for Alberta Seniors Benefits Program and the Special Needs Assistance Program is based on income. In general, seniors with an annual income (income tax line 150) under $27,300 or senior couples with a combined annual income under $44,335 may be eligible for these programs.
The Alberta Seniors Benefits Program pays a monthly supplement to eligible seniors receiving OAS & GIS (federal income sources) and includes accommodation assistance for eligible seniors living in designated supportive living and long term care.
The Special Needs Assistance Program allows eligible low income seniors to access funds that will help with the cost of appliances, furniture, health supports, and personal supports. Once you are notified of your eligibility for Seniors Financial Assistance Program, you can submit an estimate or receipt to apply for assistance towards the cost of items funded by the program.
